Theis: Whitmer fails to deliver on roads, calls for higher taxes instead

LANSING, Mich. Sen. Lana Theis, R-Brighton, issued the following statement in response to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s “Road Ahead Address”:

“After six years in office, a 40% increase in state revenue, two years of complete Democratic control in Lansing, and blowing through a staggering $9 billion surplus, Gov. Whitmer is once again asking Michigan taxpayers to foot the bill for her failure to fix the state’s crumbling roads.

“Instead of prioritizing our state’s crumbling infrastructure, despite repeated promises to do so, the governor chose to waste billions on political wish lists for Democrat members and sweetheart deals for big corporations while driving us further into debt.

“Now, instead of offering a concrete solution, she is calling for the Legislature to raise taxes to cover the costs of a problem she has failed to address. Michigan families shouldn’t have to pay for her lack of leadership.

“Over the past six years, Michigan taxpayers have paid record amounts into the state coffers, yet the roads remain among the worst in the nation. The governor’s call for higher taxes highlights her inability to deliver on her cornerstone campaign promise.

“If the governor had managed taxpayer dollars responsibly, a comprehensive road funding plan would be in place. Michigan families deserve accountability and results, not higher taxes to cover for failed policies and misplaced priorities. The Legislature is committed to holding her accountable and ensuring that taxpayer dollars are spent wisely, not wasted on ineffective initiatives.”
