Sen. Theis comments on schools’ ‘virtual snow day’

LANSING, Mich.State Sen. Lana Theis, chair of the Senate Education and Career Readiness Committee, released the following statement Tuesday after numerous school districts throughout the state declared Tuesday a “virtual snow day”:

“Simply put, the last thing Michigan students need right now is a snow day from virtual school,” said Theis, R-Brighton. “While they are certainly not to blame for their current educational predicament, because of forced virtual learning, too many students are struggling academically, falling behind or, in some cases, have stopped participating in school altogether.

“School leaders should be looking for more opportunities to connect at this critical time, not less. This is another example of the adults letting down our students, and it further underscores the need to get students physically back into classrooms for in-person instruction as soon as possible.”
